Featherweight Love 💕 (and a Terrific Resource)

My friends know that my Bernina 570 pretty much acts as my third hand…could not live without her! But, as summer arrives and my loft gets warmer and warmer 😅, I need a solution which involves porch stitching.

I am fortunate to have inherited both my mom’s black Featherweight (the machine on which I learned to sew) and my favorite aunt’s white machine (a later and much scarcer model). If you have laid your hands on one, you’ll know why folks have such a love affair with these machines. Efficient design, built to last and huge on the cute factor! Also very lightweight as the name implies, which means they can follow you anywhere…

I have pieced several lap quilts for very special people on this machine, and each time feel as if my aunt Alice is hovering nearby for a chat 😉. Singer Featherweights do one stitch and do it beautifully!

But…there is only so much piecing I do…as most of my art quilts are free-motion quilted. And neither machine came with a free-motion foot…was there a solution?

I bought a new belt (easy to put on with the video instructions) which made an enormous difference…a horizontal spool pin to accommodate my Aurifil thread 💜…and a free-motion foot and little plate to cover the feed dogs.
